The date of the Swim
O'Ween party has been changed to Sunday, 21 Oct, right after the mock meet.
We'll hold a mock meet instead of having our regular practice that day. The
mock meet has two purposes: to allow us to dry run the timing system and to
give new swimmers a preview of what to expect during an actual meet. All ages
will meet at 5 pm. The mock meet will take place from 5 to 6 pm (or
thereabouts), and the Swim O'Ween party will begin right after.
Parents, we'll need
lots of help to hold the mock meet and to provide food, games and fun to our
swimmers. The older swimmers will still go to a haunted trail, while the
younger swimmers stay at the Rec for a haunting good time. For parents of the
younger swimmers, please contact Roberta Thyne at rmthyne@woh.rr.com to
volunteer to help with the Swim O'Ween party. For parents of the older
swimmers, we'll need drivers to take the swimmers to the haunted trail in
Middletown. A sign-up sheet will be posted at the Rec Center tomorrow night.
For the mock meet,
we'll need timers (two per lane), a runner, a starter, and an announcer. For
our new familes, this is a great time to learn what goes on during a meet.
Please let me know of any questions

I'm sure you've figured out based on the number of e-mails
heading your way that we are gearing up for our first home swim meet, the John
Lunsford Memorial, 9-11 Nov. There's much to do to get ready, and you'll be
getting more messages from your KCST board as the time gets closer. For now, I
have two requests:
1. If you haven't already done so, please sign up to work
your four sessions. The job meet worksheet is hanging beneath the KCST
bulletin board at the Rec Center and the job descriptions are on the web
site. You may also contact me directly if you need help with deciding what
jobs to do.
2. We need someone to put together a compilation CD of
different versions of the National Anthem. We play the National Anthem
before every session (five times) during our home meets, and need to have
some different versions on hand to start each session. Please let me or
Margaret Hong know if you can put together a CD.

We
are excited to tell you the arrangements for an additional cross-training
opportunity for the team have been finalized. We are adding a one hour
Ashtanga yoga class which will take place in the AB room of the Senior Center
on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 beginning October 22, 2007. Our
instructor is Jo Groth who is a certified yoga instructor and licensed massage
therapist. We are offering this class to all swimmers in the Silver, Gold and
Senior groups along with any swimmer in the Bronze group who is at least 10
years old. Due to the structure of the class, children younger than 10 may
have difficulty getting through it.
For those of you who are not familiar with yoga and its many variations.
Ashtanga yoga is the so-called “power” version and will engage the entire body
in poses and deep breathing designed to strengthen muscles (including those
you aren’t normally aware of), improve flexibility and heighten overall body
awareness.
The class will normally be open to swimmers only; however, Jo is welcoming
any parents who are interested in experiencing what the kids will be doing to
attend the first class on October 22. You will not learn much by watching
because the activity looks deceptively easy, so Jo has offered to bring extra
mats for parent participation on that date. All swimmers will need to
purchase and bring their own mat every week. They are inexpensive and can be
found at Meijer, Target, TJ Maxx, Dick’s and Marshall’s. An optional purchase
would be a strap, but you may want to wait until after the first class to
decide whether you need this. Jo will plan to stay after the first class for
the purpose of answering any questions either the swimmers or parents may
have. In the meantime, if you want more information about Jo, check her
website: www.jogasomaticarts.com.
We
are enthusiastic about the potential this type of cross training offers our
swimmers and we hope you will see the difference it makes in your child
throughout the season.
MONDAY
NIGHTS ONLY
Yoga training will
replace the scheduled Dry Land workout from 7:00 to 7:30 (i.e., no Monday
Dry Land).
We will continue
to have stroke clinic from 7:00 to 7:30 for those who sign up. (you may want
to bring a pair of sweats to put on after stroke clinic to wear while doing
Yoga)
Silver swimmers
you will be in Yoga training from 7:30 to 8:30. Practice will be extended
until 9:00 for you to get some water time.
Gold & Senior
Swimmers you will be in Yoga training from 7:30 to 8:30. Practice will then
be move into the pool until your schedule end time of 9:30.
Bronze swimmers 10
years or older you are welcome and encouraged to come to the Yoga Training
from 7:30 to 8:30. There will be no Bronze water time added for Monday
nights.
